Evergreen Building, Vancouver, BC

Arthur Ericksonが設計し、1980年に建設されたEvergreen Buildingの取り壊しについて以前記事を書きました。それ以来このビルの前を通るたびに胸が痛みました。ところが、この取り壊しが撤回されたことを昨日知りました！ 市の議会書によると、建物は重要な文化財であり、保存のために市は必要な助成金を出すと提示しました。この建物のオーナーには二つのオプションが提案され、住居用に５階分建て増しするか、商業用に建て増しなしで維持するかのどちらかだそうです。どちらにしてもこの建物が保存されることになったのでとても嬉しいです。 5月27日（土）からArthur Erickson展がバンクーバー美術館で開催されます。行くのが楽しみです。 I have written an article about demolition of the Evergreen Building which was constructed in 1980 and designed by Arthur Erickson.  Since then, I felt very sad every time I passed this building, however, … Continue reading →

Etre et Avoir

フランスのドキュメンタリー映画 Etre et Avoir (英題：To be and to have、邦題：ぼくの大好きな先生）を観た。４歳から１１歳までの１３人の小学生とその先生の学校生活が８ヶ月間撮影された。小学校は南フランスの人口２００人程の村にある。この村は私達が去年行った村のすぐ近くにあると知って興奮しながら映画を観た。私が感動したのは、３５年の教師経験がある先生の指導方法。一人一人の子供たちの気持ち、興味、悩みを理解する。子供の長所を誉め、短所を認識させ、問題点があればどのように解決したら良いか一緒に考える。邦題のように、子供たちは先生が大好きだ。私もこんな先生に習いたかったな。 監督のNicolas Philibertは３００程の学校を訪問し、この学校に決めた。この映画はフランスで大ヒッしたそうだが、この成功のために、生徒のと先生が出演料を求めて監督を訴えた。このニュースを聞いてがっがりしましたが、この映画はお勧めです。 We watched a French documentary film, Etre et Avoir (English title:To be and To have, Japanese title:My favourite teacher).   The life of a teacher and 13 elementary students, aged … Continue reading →

Community Garden

２年目のコミュニティガーデンです。去年と較べると、ずっと畑らしくなりました。今年の畑は最初に深く耕しました。畑耕すのって力要りますね。とてもがんばった夫の手は豆だらけでした。今年は、じゃがいも、たまねぎ、えんどう豆、レタス、しそ、春菊と、丈夫に育つ野菜を植えました。先週末、行ってみると芽が出ていました。いえ～い。 This is our second year to join the community garden.  Compared to the last year, the garden looks much better.  This year we dug deep to begin with.  You really need a lot of power to dig up the ground.  My husband … Continue reading →

Franz Ferdinand and Death Cab for Cutie

Franz FerdinandとDeath Cab for Cutieのコンサートに行ってきた。コンサート会場に到着すると友達姉妹に偶然に会う。彼女達は日本に住んだことがあって、その時から家族の友達である。18歳の時に初めてバンクーバーに来て、1ヶ月ホームステイをさせて貰った。その時は英語をきちんと話せなかった。色んな所に連れていってもらって楽しい思い出がたくさんある。その10年後に移民するとは思ってもいなかった。彼女達とは２年ほど会っていなかったので、久しぶりに会えて本当に嬉しかった。彼女達は二人とも２児のママで、音楽がとても好き。最近はどんな音楽を聴いているとか色々話して、今度一緒にコンサート行こうねと約束した。 We went to see Franz Ferdinand and Death Cab for Cutie.  When we arrived at the venue, we coincidently met our old friends who are sisters.  They have lived in Japan before and my family … Continue reading →
