Umbilical cord とは日本語でへその緒のこと。妊婦さんのToonieちゃんは日本からたくさんの赤ちゃんグッズをゲット。その中の一つが、赤ちゃんのへその緒用木製の小箱。

The umbilical cord is Heso no o (cord of naval) in Japanese. A pregnant lady, Tooni-chan, got lots of baby goods from Japan. One of them is a wooden box for her baby’s umbilical cord.

日本人はへその緒を取っておく。これは昔からの慣習。Toonieちゃんから分かったことなんだけど、カナダで赤ちゃんを産む場合は、ごみ箱に捨てられる前に、へその緒下さいとお医者さんか看護婦さんにリクエストしとかないといけないんだって。日本の病院はへその緒を干して渡してくれるがカナダは違う。大抵、ジップロックの袋に入れられて渡され、自分で血抜きをして、干さないといけないらしい。

Japanese people keep their own umbilical cord, which is their very old custom. I learnt from Toonie-chan that, when you have a baby in Canada, you’ve got to request doctors or nurses to keep the umbilical cord before being thrown into a bin. Japanese hospitals make the cord dried for you but not in Canada. Normally the cord will be given in a Ziploc bag and you have to get the blood out and dry it by yourself.

あるウェブサイトによると、パキスタン人とインド人はへその緒をお祈りをしながら地に埋めるようだ。エジプト人は赤ちゃんが生まれて７日目の「お七夜」に赤ちゃんが着ている服に子袋を付ける。その中には、その赤ちゃんのへその緒、穀物、お金が入っている。そして、１ヶ月経った時に、子袋をこっそりと通りに捨てて、それを偶然拾った人は幸運になるそうだ。

According to a website, Pakistanis and Indians bury the umbilical cord in the ground with chanting. Egyptians attach a little bag to clothes that a baby is wearing on the 7th night after birth. The little bag has the umbilical cord, grain, and some money inside. After one month, you throw the bag secretly to a street and the person who picked it up coincidentally gets lucky.

ミイラ化したへその緒を中に見つけて、幸運って思うかぁ？エジプト人には、「うわ、また今日、へその緒拾っちゃったよ。俺って今日はなんてラッキー！」っていう経験があったりして。ちょっとエジプト人に確認しなければ。
